8-electrode vs 4-electrode body fat scales: what the handles add

By the Everhale team · Updated 28 October 2026

Both types of scale estimate body fat from a tiny electrical current. The difference is where the current travels, and so how much of your body the scale actually measures instead of guessing.

Short answer. A 4-electrode scale sends current through your legs only. An 8-electrode scale adds hand grips, so current also passes through your arms and trunk and the scale can report five segments: each arm, each leg and the trunk. It is closer to measuring your whole body, but it is still an estimate.

How a 4-electrode (foot-only) scale works

A typical bathroom body-fat scale has two metal plates for each foot. Current goes up one leg, across the pelvis and down the other. It measures your lower body well, but your arms and upper trunk are not in the path, so the scale estimates them from equations based on your height, weight, age and sex.

How an 8-electrode (hand-and-foot) scale works

An 8-electrode scale adds four more electrodes in hand grips, two for each hand. Now current can travel from a hand to the other hand, from a hand to a foot and from foot to foot. Separate measurements for each arm, each leg and the trunk become possible. That is five segments instead of one whole-body number.

What the extra electrodes give you

In published comparisons, multi-frequency hand-and-foot devices tend to agree better with DEXA than single-frequency foot-only scales. No home scale matches a DEXA scan, and results vary between models and between people (see how accurate body fat scales are).

When a foot-only scale is enough

If you only want a simple trend in body fat and weight and you do not need arm and leg detail, a good foot-only scale does the job for less money. The handle matters when you want to see where fat and muscle are changing, for example while strength training or recovering from an injury.

How Everhale uses 8 electrodes

The Everhale scale has four electrodes in the glass platform and four in a hand bar, measured at two frequencies (20 kHz and 100 kHz). The app draws fat as yellow tissue and muscle as red over a body map, and compares each part with what is typical for your height and sex. Common questions

How do I hold the handle on an 8-electrode scale?

Stand barefoot on the platform, hold the hand bar with both hands, keep your arms straight and relaxed, and stay still until the reading finishes. Doing it the same way each morning gives the clearest trend.

Is a hand-and-foot scale more accurate than a foot-only scale?

Often closer to DEXA in published comparisons, because the arms and trunk are measured instead of only estimated. Results still vary between models and people, and neither type replaces a clinical scan.

Are 8-electrode scales safe?

The current is very small and cannot be felt, but these scales are not suitable for anyone with a pacemaker or another implanted electronic medical device, and body composition is not measured during pregnancy.
